Spring Conference 2013

A couple of D6 Kindred Spirits, Sheryl Lamme (me) and Michelle Livek

To borrow the creed of the US Postal service, Neither rain, nor snow, nor sleet, could prevent the attendees of the MAEA Spring 2013 conference from gathering for some exceptional professional development and a rockin’ good time! If you have conference pictures you'd like to share here please email them to me sllamme@yahoo.com.

If you attended PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE submit your conference evaluation and remember to rate the workshops attended.
Your input is exceedingly important! What do we need more of? Less of? What changes need to be made? And, don't forget that the secret workshop goodies link is located at the very end of the online evaluation form.

Eighteen members of D6 made it to our district meeting! That’s a new record since I have become district rep. Not only did those eighteen members attend, but they also pulled together and volunteered amazing support and an abundance of creative ideas for Spring Conference 2014.
Which, for those of you who weren’t able to attend, will be held in Jefferson City, March 13-16, 2014. The theme will be ‘Capitalize on the Arts’ and WE, District 6, will be the sponsors! Right now it looks as though Holley Smothers and I will be the chair and co-chair for planning, but it’s going to take all of us working together and prove to the rest of our organization just how committed and wonderful we really are. I must say that District 10 set the bar really high!

News to Remember:
Conference Dates – Fall, Knob Noster October 11th & 12th
Spring – March 13-16, 2014 Jefferson City

Workshop proposals now have an online format. The form utilizes the same format as NAEA uses for national convention proposals, and is aligned with Missouri Teacher Quality Standards. Fall Workshop proposals should be submitted before May 15 for priority consideration and Spring proposals are due August 15.

If you present, there is a $25. registration discount, one per presentation, per conference and up to a $50. reimbursement for consumable supplies. Within our D6 collective, there was a big interest in seeing more workshops connected to meaningful art making. Presenting is fun, doesn’t involve a tremendous amount of preparation, and should encourage your administration’s support!

Awards Nominations also have a new online format. The entire process for awards submission must be submitted no later than October 1st 2013. Nominees need plenty of time to prepare, so nominate as soon as possible. Visit MAEA for more information on these awards and categories. I think every single one of you is passionate and committed to our profession; every single one of you is worthy of an award! Nominating a special individual doesn’t take much effort on your part, and just being nominated is a tremendous honor. I think it’s especially important to remember our small districts and those K-12 art teachers. Please take ten minutes to nominate a special someone.

Thanks to all of you for being so wonderful! I’ll be posting again soon, encouraging you to submit news, events, and photos for ShowMe Art.

Spring Conference

Spring Conference t-shirt Design (will be printed on blue shirts)

Greeting MAEA District 6, I hope that everyone has made plans to attend Spring Conference. I am counting down the days myself, looking forward to seeing old friends, making new ones, and learning new ways to infuse my lessons with meaning.

I can’t wait to hear the keynote speaker Dr. Robert Sabol, president of NAEA and Chair of the Purdue University Art Department. President of NAEA, OMG, how lucky are we?! District 10 has done an outstanding job of arranging super exciting off-site events, which run Thursday – Saturday. If you would like to order the conference t-shirt, please visit http://maea2012t-shirts.eventbrite.com

You will need to pre-order before March 15, and can pick your shirt up at the information booth located in the Convention Center lobby.

As always, let me know how I can best meet your needs as your District 6 rep! slamme@waynesville.k12.mo.us

W-9 FORMS
– If your school needs a W-9 form email LBMAEA@yahoo.com and provide an email or mailing address to which the form can be sent.

RECEIPTS FOR PAYMENT:
All receipts will be sent by email. Be sure you have included an email that will accept my email. Many school emails have spam filters that block outside emails.

POs FOR CONFERENCE REGISTRATION WILL BE ACCEPTED WITH THE FOLLOWING STIPULATIONS: PO Must be received before registration deadline and Payment MUST be received by conference date.
If your school must pay by using a PO the information below is provided.

1. Pay attention to the deadline for registration. POs must be received before the registration deadline or the late fee will be added.

2. Payment for POs must be received by the conference date. A late fee will be added to the invoice if the payment is not received by conference date. The school will be re-invoiced for the new amount.

3. Invoices will be sent to your school as soon as the PO is received. Prompt payment is expected.

4. Your conference registration file will not be completed until payment is received.

5. Be sure the name of the person being registered is included on the PO.

6. School must include the PO# and/or name of person registered with all payments.

HOW TO REGISTER USING A PO

1. Request the PO from your school. Do this early. Some schools are very slow in issuing POs and paying the invoice. Make your school aware of the deadlines and that the late fee will be added to invoice after the deadline.

2. Email the registrar (LBMAEA@yahoo.com) to expect your PO.

Include your name, school district & amount of PO.

3. Send the PO

a) Scan and send the PO as an attachment (LMBAEA@yahoo.com). This is the fastest and easiest way to send the PO. Or:

b) Mail the PO: MAEA, Linda Bowers, PO Box 645, Bridgeton, MO 63044

c) Fax the PO: 314-739-4288 (be sure to follow this method up with an email, since this is a home business phone if someone picks-up or is using the phone the fax doesn’t go through). An email will be sent to the sender confirming that the fax was received. If the fax is not confirmed by email it probably was not received.

4. Confirmation of receiving the PO will be sent by email when the PO is received.

5. The school will be invoiced for the amount of the PO immediately on receiving the PO. Since most schools only pay invoices once a month it is important to get the PO request in early.

6. When payment of the invoice is received an email will be sent confirming payment to the person being registered for the conference. Please forward a copy of the confirmation of payment to your business office.

PAYING ON PAYPAL – the preferred way to pay.

1. Go to MAEA.net/conferences and click on the PAY ONLINE link. Select the correct payment amount and complete the online form.

2. IF THE PAYMENT (CARD USED) has a different NAME or ADDRESS from the person being registered please be sure to list the name and email of the person being registered on the paypal site.

3. Email the registrar (LBMAEA@yahoo.com) that your payment has been made on PayPal. A confirmation of registration will be sent and if additional information is needed to complete registration it will be requested by email.

4. It is not necessary to send a registration form when registering on PayPal. The registration can be completed by email.

5. Contact Linda Bowers (LBMAEA@yahoo.com) with any questions regarding payment.

REASONS FOR PAYING ON PAYPAL

1. It is not necessary to fill out paper registration form. Registration can be handled online or with email.

2. Your PayPal receipt is your proof of payment for registration, reimbursement and tax purposes

3. If a refund is necessary you can receive a no fuss refund.

4. No waiting for a check to be mailed.

5. Check won’t get lost in the mail. During Spring 2012 two checks were lost in the mail. One check, mailed 3/8, arrived on 3/29- one week after conference (mangled in a plastic sleeve). The second check never arrived.

PAY WITH A PERSONAL CHECK AND ASK SCHOOL FOR REIMBURSEMENT

1. Make the check to MAEA and Mail to: MAEA, Linda Bowers, PO Box 645, Bridgeton, MO 63044

2. Send your completed registration form with your payment

3. All receipts will be sent by email. Make sure you have included a working email (Put my email in your email contacts to avoid the spam filter).

Mark Your Calendars!

MAEA Fall Conference is an annual tradition held at Knob Noster State Park. It's more laid back than spring conference and is probably my favorite of the two conferences. No matter the weather, I love being outdoors. It's a great time to meet new people and reconnect with old friends. There are many hands-on workshops and everything is a little more casual and laid-back. Drag and Brag is a fantastic time to exchange lesson plans and see examples of student work. This year it's planned for October 12-13. You can find more information on the MAEA website http://www.maea.net/fall_conference.html

If you have any questions please email  slamme@waynesville.k12.mo.us
If this is your first conference let me know. I'll make plans to meet up and introduce you to everyone I know. I assure you, you won't feel like a newbie for long!

Here's some general conference information I'm passing along:
